Frank Graziano

Frank Graziano

John D. McArthur Professor of Hispanic Studies

-- Connecticut College
HWL Affiliation: Visiting Faculty Fellow
Year Visiting: 2014 to 2015

Professor Graziano was based in the Department of Religious Studies, where he collaborated with David Morgan, and he also worked with Noah Pickus and Suzanne Shanahan of the Kenan Institute for Ethics.

While at Duke he completed Miraculous Images and Votive Offerings in Mexico, a book under contract with Oxford University Press, and its companion website.

His collaborations centered on the development of colloquia on “Economies of the Sacred” — which focused on the material culture of religion and its role in understanding the operation of religions as sacred economies — and on  “Christianity and Global Migration” — which focused on the move of Latin American Catholics to the United States and of African Evangelicals and Pentecostals to western Europe.

He also led a workshop at the Kenan Institute on Unaccompanied Child Migration.  This event examined the ethical implications of migration by unaccompanied minors. Three guest speakers—Jacqueline Bhabha, Marcelo M. Suárez-Orozco, and Susan J. Terrio—highlighted the health, legal, and human rights issues at play. They were joined by more than a dozen discussants, including six from Duke—Sara Katsanis (Science and Society), Jolie Olcott (History), Nadia El-Shaarawi and Suzanne Shanahan (Kenan Institute for Ethics), Orin Starn (Anthropology), and Charles Thompson (Documentary Studies).
