My research examines how political communities constitute themselves, and identify their members, in opposition to persons that they exclude or marginalize. As a political philosopher, I am most interested in the norms and ideals invoked to justify these acts. In terms of concrete practices, I examine incarceration, felon disenfranchisement, and the criminalization of undocumented immigrants.
