Stories are everywhere: around, between, and in us. If the impulse for narrative and story is, as Roland Barthes suggested, “international, trans-historical, and transcultural,” then what might it mean to consider story from the most common human denominator of all: biology? James Wahlberg is completing Duke’s Master of Arts in Liberal Studies (MALS) program with a final project entitled Story as Biology, in which he uses ethology, neuroscience, evolution, and close readings to consider the essential human behavior of storytelling. He will share some of the explorations and experiments that make up his project.
